Overview

Ami is more than an AI assistant. It is a compassionate companion designed to support individuals with Bipolar II disorder as they transition to living independently.
By combining emotional intelligence with daily routine management, Ami helps users regain stability, stay connected, and feel truly understood.

Background

For individuals living with bipolar disorder, maintaining emotional stability, social connections, and a daily routine can be especially challenging.

While traditional apps offer reminders and tracking, they often feel impersonal and overwhelming, failing to provide the warmth and empathy these users need most.

Ami began with a simple goal: to turn technology into a source of comfort, not pressure.

Research

Primary Research

Interviews with:

  • Executive Director, International Bipolar Foundation (IBF)

  • Former Alexa Health & Wellness Specialist (Amazon)

These insights revealed that effective digital support requires balance, engagement without intrusion, and strong emotional safety protocols.

Secondary Research

We explored the daily struggles of individuals with Bipolar II, examining symptom patterns, independent living barriers, and coping frameworks such as SMEDMERTS.

User Insights

Participants: 5 individuals managing Bipolar II disorder

Key Takeaways

  • “Ami’s tone feels warm and encouraging.”

  • “I liked being able to see my routine visually.”

  • “Have Ami read out the list. It can be stressful to read during tough moments.”

  • “Add a protocol for when users don’t respond for a few days.”

These findings led to an emphasis on soothing voice interaction and safety-driven behavioral response design.

Problem Statement

Drivers need calm visual feedback, clear communication of control state, and emotional reassurance during autonomy transitions.

Interaction Example

Scenario 1 – Low Mood Day

  • User: “I just want to stay in bed. I don’t feel like eating or doing anything.”

  • Ami: “I get it. It’s okay to rest, but try one small thing, maybe a shower first. Small steps count.”

Scenario 2 – Feeling Lonely

  • User: “I have no plans until dinner.”

  • Ami: “It’s a nice day. How about a walk or a coffee? You deserve a little moment for yourself.”

Ami’s tone blends gentle motivation and nonjudgmental empathy, modeled after real mental health coaching patterns.

Safety Protocol

Level 1: Contacts the user’s emergency contact
Level 2: Reaches a crisis counselor
Level 3: Automatically contacts emergency services

These steps ensure emotional safety without inducing fear or pressure.
